MANORVILLE, N.Y. — A “zombie house” in Manorville that has long been a source of concern for neighbors was demolished Tuesday, according to Brookhaven officials.
Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig with Brookhaven Town Supervisor Daniel Panico at the demolition of the burned home, located at 126 Silas Carter St. in Manorville, Panico said.
In late 2023, the house was severely damaged by fire after squatters moved in, creating a safety hazard for the neighborhood, officials added.
The home was demolished under Municipal Code Chapter 73, which provides a “fast track” to rid neighborhoods of unsafe structures, the city said.
The cost of demolition and debris removal is borne by the property owner and the city places a lien on the property which is then placed on the tax bill. Suffolk County reimburses the city. they then collect the money from the property owner, officials said.
“Residents who live near this home have requested that the property be demolished and cleaned up,” Kesnig said. “I am pleased that we were able to remove this dangerous blight from the neighborhood. I will continue to work with our legal department to crack down on owners who allow their property to have a negative impact on the community.”
Anyone with complaints about a zombie home in Council District 6 is asked to call Kesnig's office at 631-451-6502.
