WESTHAMPTON, N.Y. — A Westhampton man was arrested Tuesday after an hours-long standoff, police said.
According to Southampton Police, the incident took place at approximately 11:36 am. when patrol cars, as well as New York State Police, responded to a welfare check call for someone in Westhampton.
When police arrived, the man pointed a gun at responding officers, authorities said. He ended up actually having a pepper spray gun, police said.
New York and Southampton State Police crisis negotiators and the Southampton Emergency Services Unit responded to the scene, as did Southampton police detectives, a Suffolk County K-9 unit and the Westhampton Beach Fire Department, it said. the police.
After an hours-long standoff, Jacob Bergman, 49, was arrested and charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor, and second-degree harassment, a misdemeanor, p0lice said. .
He was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for medical evaluation and will be transported at a later date, police said.
