LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Islanders are in for a wet Saturday, with a flash flood watch in effect across Long Island.
A flood watch is in effect for all of Long Island from 8 a.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday, according to Dominic Ramuni, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in Upton.
Rain is expected to develop overnight Friday, intensifying Saturday morning, with the heaviest and most consistent rain, about an inch per hour, expected to fall from noon Saturday to early evening, he said. Ramuni.
Along with issues such as urban flooding, Ramuni said the possibility of localized flash flooding cannot be ruled out.
The rain is expected to taper off Saturday night, Ramuni said, adding that the “kick” will come in the form of strong winds blowing in as the rain dissipates. Long Islanders will see wind gusts up to 30 to 40 mph Sunday, he said.
Temperatures will remain above freezing Friday night and reach the low 50s Saturday afternoon, but Sunday night will see those temperatures drop back into the 30s, Ramunni said. On Sunday, temperatures are expected to reach the upper 40s before dropping back to freezing Sunday night, he said. Monday morning's wind chill will make it feel like it's in the 20s, Ramunni said — a brisk start to the work week after Mother Nature delivered an “experiment of spring” earlier this month, he said .
