On Tuesday, December 14th at the Southampton City Council meeting, the city council unanimously passed a resolution to amend the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) standards and incorporate the NYStretch-2020 Energy Code as a component of the Energy Conservation Code city's.
The city is focusing on reducing energy consumption through land use through code amendments and programs specifically aimed at reducing energy consumption by requiring high efficiency for all new or substantially remodeled housing. The new code is 10-12% more efficient than the minimum requirements of the 2020 New York State Energy Conservation Building Code.
This is another proactive step by the City of Southampton to enact legislation that promotes sustainability, environmental protection and energy conservation. In recent years, the city has made great strides to meet the energy and carbon neutrality goals set out in the City's Sustainability Plan.
“This is one of many steps the City and State have taken toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy dependency,” said Councilman John Bouvier, lead sponsor of the resolution. “It's visionary in a way, and hopefully it will encourage other municipalities, our neighbors in this area, to continue to push toward these goals.”
