A planned Manhattan-to-Montauk bike ride Saturday that has attracted as many as 3,000 riders in recent years has not received the necessary permits from the town and village of East Hampton.
Concerned that the ride, which The East Hampton Star reports is organized by Glen Goldstein of Bicycle Shows US, will go ahead without the necessary permits, the East Hampton Town Board sent an assistant attorney to state Superior Court in Riverhead to request a temporary ban. The Star reports that a decision is expected this Friday.
The group bike ride has been popular and disruptive in recent years, as thousands of cyclists leave Penn Station at 5 a.m. and then begin their 150-mile trek east to the Montauk cliffs.
Goldstein tells Newsday that he's confident there will be a ride on Saturday, but that he just doesn't know what it will look like yet.
