SAGAPONACK, NY — A 73-year-old man from Switzerland drowned at a Sagaponack beach earlier this month, police said.
According to Southampton Police, on Oct. 4 at approximately 3:30 p.m., an abandoned 911 call came in from the area of Gibson Lane in Sagaponack. Dispatchers were able to reconnect with the caller, who reported a man missing in the water after going swimming at Gibson Beach, police said.
Southampton police officers, marine units, detectives, the Bridgehampton Fire Department and EMS responded to the area to search for the missing swimmer, police said.
The swimmer, Robert De Vos Burchart, was found unconscious on the beach a short time later. CPR was started and he was taken by Bridgehampton Fire EMS to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
