MONTAUK, NY —The Suffolk Economic Opportunity Council, Inc., the longtime operator of the Montauk Child Care Center, has announced why it has decided to terminate its contract to operate the facility, effective May 3.
Since its inception in 2006, the Montauk Child Care Center has provided essential child care services to the community, the EOC said. Despite strong commitment and concerted efforts to maintain the centre, the EOC of Suffolk faced escalating operational costs, particularly in staffing, exacerbated by the recent national rise in inflation, the EOC added.
In addition, the center consistently operates below required enrollment levels for sustainability, the EOC said.
“The cumulative effect of these factors has led to a financial deficit that is no longer sustainable,” said Adrian Fassett, president and chief executive of the EOC of Suffolk. “This decision was not taken lightly and we understand the impact it will have on families in the area and the community at large.”
The city of East Hampton said last week it will issue a request for proposals to identify a new operator for the child care facility. The EOC of Suffolk said it was committed to a smooth and orderly transition, prioritizing the wellbeing of families and children dependent on the centre's services. To that end, all supplies, toys, materials and equipment will be left with the next operator of the center, ensuring continuity of care and resources for children in the community, the EOC said.
“We express our deepest gratitude to the Montauk community for their trust and support over the past 17 years,” Fassett added. “We are proud of the role we have played in the lives of so many families and remain committed to serving the community through our other programs and services.”
“The City of East Hampton is grateful for the EOC's long-standing service to the community and is committed to ensuring that hard-working families continue to have access to quality child care options in Montauk,” said Kathee Burke-Gonzalez, East Hampton Supervisor Town.
