Suffolk County Community College's Cybersecurity Program has been awarded a Study Accreditation Program by the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C). The certification team is run by the US government's National Cryptology School at the National Security Agency (NSA). The NSA leads the US government in cryptography and cyber security.
“There are few priorities more pressing for our country than cyber security,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonagiu. “We live much of our lives online, and I'm proud that Suffolk is training a workforce with the expertise to ensure security for all types of businesses and organizations.”
“This is an outstanding certification and places Suffolk County Community College and our students in an elite group of national institutions and programs,” said Engineering and Technology Academic Chair Professor Peter Maritato, who added that Associate Professor Cyber Security Susan Frank defended the effort. for the College's national certification.
Frank said the institutions are defined based on a strong program and close alignment with specific cybersecurity-related units of knowledge validated by leading experts in the field. Applications are reviewed by a panel of government staff and peer reviewers before certification is granted.
“Our comprehensive program is a result of faculty teamwork and provides students with challenging workshops and activities that simulate real-world experiences,” Frank said, adding that the national certification will provide Suffolk students with a path to federal positions work in cyberspace.
The mission of the NCAE program is to establish and manage a collaborative cybersecurity education program with US institutions of higher education that:
establishes standards for cyber curriculum and academic excellence;
includes capacity building between students and teachers,
values community outreach and leadership in professional development;
integrates cybersecurity practice within the institution across academic disciplines;
actively participates in solutions to challenges facing cyber education.
Federal partners include the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)/National Initiative on Cybersecurity Education (NICE), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Defense Office of the Chief Information Officer (DoD-CIO) and the US Cyber Command (CYBERCOM).
The never-ending threat of cyber-related crime has created a high demand for cyber experts, ethical hackers and professionals trained to detect, stop and prevent cyber crimes. Nationally, there are nearly half a million open cybersecurity jobs.
Suffolk County Community College's Cybersecurity and Information Assurance program prepares students for a career in the cybersecurity industry.
