The Mariners pulled out of a game against the Bishop Mercy-McGann Monarchs on Friday due to disciplinary issues, according to Southampton School District Superintendent Scott Farina.
“We had a report of student disciplinary issues surrounding the high school football program,” Farina said. Disciplinary action was taken against more than one student, he said, adding that an investigation was underway.
“We couldn't safely play a football game,” he said. It was supposed to be their last game of the season.
There are about 35 students in the group. Asked how many students it would take to continue the game, he said the number varies. “That depends on the students playing both ways, moving players from junior varsity to varsity and whether that's in their best interest,” he said.
Only the varsity football game was canceled. The JV team will travel to Mercy-McGann on November 4th.
Farina said he could not talk about disciplinary action against students. He would not comment on whether the investigation involved police or was simply a school investigation.
Hampton Bays also forfeited a game against Greenport on Friday night, also due to disciplinary issues, according to Hampton Bays Superintendent of Schools Lars Clemensen.
Both he and Farina said the disciplinary actions are unrelated.
