SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Southampton city officials are launching a new program to ease traffic woes.
On April 1, the Southampton Police Department, in partnership with the Southampton Highway Department, will launch the Kano Traffic Reduction Program, “to address the increasing traffic congestion in our community,” city officials said.
The Canoe Place Traffic Reduction Program will be implemented weekdays between the hours of 5:30 A.M. and 9:30 a.m. at that intersection, officials said. Other lane modifications will also be developed to facilitate the flow of traffic through the intersection.
Southampton police officers will be deployed to ensure the safety of motorists and highway department staff will also be deployed to deploy traffic cones, signs and electronic signs to alert and inform motorists traveling through the intersection, officials said. city.
Drivers are encouraged to support the effort by obeying traffic laws, practicing defensive driving and being aware of pedestrians and other road users, officials urged.
Southampton City Supervisor Maria Moore said the city council is committed to maintaining the program until the end of September as part of a broader effort to find ways to ease traffic congestion in the city.
The new Traffic Mitigation and Safety Task Force, established by city council resolution, will begin meeting in April to review other potential traffic mitigation strategies and make recommendations to the city council in the fall, he added.
