LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Island is set to see snow Monday through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Brian Ciemnecki, a meteorologist with the NWS office in Upton, said a winter weather advisory is in effect for Nassau County, but not for Suffolk. Light snow is expected to spread across the area Monday night, starting around midnight or possibly a little earlier.
The snow is expected to last overnight into Tuesday. In Suffolk County, he said, temperatures could warm enough for the snowfall to change to some rain, possibly ending in a short snow period again.
In Nassau County, where a winter weather advisory is in effect, snow will continue to fall through the morning, Ciemnecki said. In total, about 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected in Suffolk County, with 2 to 3 inches forecast for Nassau County.
Parts of western Suffolk could also see 2 to 3 inches, he said.
Overnight temperatures on Long Island are expected to drop into the mid-20s. During the day Tuesday they are expected to rise into the mid 30s in Nassau County and the mid to upper 30s in Suffolk. “You can't rule out a 40-degree temperature in Montauk,” Ciemnecki said
Winds are not expected to be a problem with the weather phenomenon, likely around 10 mph, and “pretty light,” Ciemnecki said. No coastal flooding is expected, he added.
