SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Southampton police are warning residents about an “ongoing” and frightening scam that has been circulating in the community for the past few months.
“The scam usually starts with a phone call saying your family member is being held captive,” police said. “The caller may claim that your daughter has been kidnapped and you hear a woman screaming in the background.”
Another version of the scam involves the caller saying a family member is being held for causing a car accident, is injured — and won't be allowed to go to the hospital until the damages are paid, police said.

Callers typically provide the victim with specific instructions to ensure the safe return of the family member, police said. “You may be ordered to stay in line until the money is returned,” police added.
Police advise residents to avoid becoming victims of fraud:

– Beware of incoming calls from an external area code and not from the “victim's” number.
– Callers make every effort to keep you on the phone.
– Callers that prevent you from calling or locating the “victim”.
– Funds requested via bank transfer service.
Here are some ways to respond if you think you're being targeted:
– Ask to speak directly with the victim. Ask, “How do I know my loved one is okay?”
– Ask the caller to describe the victim or their vehicle.
– Listen carefully to the kidnapped “victim's” voice if they speak.
– Call, text or contact the alleged “victim” independently from another phone.
– Tell the caller that you need extra time to meet their requirements.
– Do not challenge or argue directly with the caller.
-At the first opportunity, notify your local police department.
– To prevent this scam, keep your social media accounts private.
