SAG HARBOR, N.Y. — The effects of a tropical storm couldn't dampen spirits in Sag Harbor this weekend, as the school district and community teamed up to celebrate homecoming activities before high winds and heavy rains.
Warnings of winds up to 40 miles per hour prompted Pierson Middle School faculty and staff to “act quickly to ensure homecoming plans are still happening” for Pierson students this year, the district said.
The homecoming carnival, as tradition dictates, was scheduled for Friday night — and the parade and skits for Saturday morning.
But with the effects of Tropical Storm Ophelia, the students, families and community of Sag Harbor worked to present the parade and skits a day early.
On Friday afternoon, Pierson students were bussed down Sag Harbor's main street for a parade that ended at Mashashimuet Park.
“With floats and skits that may have been a little rushed, the energy was still high as students celebrated their Pierson Whalers pride together,” the district said.
The day continued with a Pierson girls volleyball match that ended with a win against Ross School, the district said.
Dressed in red, white and black, Pierson students, families and staff gathered on Pierson's back court soon after for their homecoming carnival and lip sync battle.
Entertainment included food trucks, henna tattoos, lawn games and a blow-up obstacle course. Friends and families mingled and crowds formed for special moments, such as when special education teacher Justin Clinton, sitting inside the tank, challenged students to try their aim, the district said.
The evening concluded with the “high-energy lip sync battle between middle school classes,” the district said. Finally, the homecoming court was announced: 9th graders Bohdyn Zajac and Lola Eldrige, 10th graders Sebastian Beech and Audrey Monaco, and 11th graders Adam Drohan and Wyeth Zeff took homecoming prince and princess titles. Aidan Schmitz and Caroline McGuire were crowned homecoming king and queen, the district said.
