BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY — Nancy Strauss Ireland of Bridgehampton, NY and NY passed away peacefully on May 16, 2019. She was surrounded at her bedside by her husband, Gary, and children, Bryan and Sydney, and her sister, Serena .
Nancy was born in New York and raised in Demarest, New Jersey. She studied at Tulane University and continued her educational journey at Fordham University Graduate School of Business, then worked in finance and insurance, including 15 years at Morgan Stanley.
Once she met her husband, Gary, and they were blessed with children, she found her true calling in education while attending Bank Street College of Education. Nancy served the Bank Street community as a classroom teacher, Camper Support Coordinator, and itinerant Special Education teacher. Since 2014, Nancy has also taught graduate students at City College of CUNY. He proudly served on the Alexander Robertson School Board of Trustees. Nancy fought a long and courageous battle with cancer and was an inspirational member of Gilda's Club in New York, touching the lives of so many members and their families.
Nancy's life was a testament to love, learning and caring, while proving that she could be a compassionate friend to all. She never stopped giving back to others and educating children until the end, despite what she faced in her personal life. Nancy continues to serve as an inspiration and tower of strength to all who have crossed her path. She will be greatly missed.
Nancy's life was celebrated by an overflow crowd at the Plaza Jewish Community Chapel on May 23, 2019.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Gary and children, Bryan and Sydney, as well as her brother Justin Strauss (Gloria), sister Serena Strauss Samph (Ian), Samantha Strauss (Michael), and brother-in-law of David Lewison and many nieces and nephews including Grant, Bridget, Layla, Scarlett, Eliza and Ty. Nancy is predeceased by her mother Barbara Balaber-Strauss, her father Richard Strauss and her sister Elizabeth Strauss Lewison.
Until the end, Nancy worked to make sure everyone else was cared for and had the right tools to walk their paths. We are all grateful for Memorial Sloan Kettering's care, empathy and wonderful community outreach during this time. Nancy and her family request that donations be made to two of her favorite organizations, Gilda's Club and Nightingale-Bamford School. Please keep your loved ones close.
