WATER MILL, NY — A Southampton man was arrested after he endangered others when he fired his gun while trying to unload and secure it — and injured his hand, police said.
According to Southampton Police, the incident took place on September 14 at approximately 10am. A call came in for a person with a gunshot wound at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, police said.
The Southampton Police Department's detective division responded and began an investigation, which revealed the man injured in the shooting, Alfred Callahan III, 37, had recklessly discharged his firearm, injuring his hand, police said.

Callahan was in possession of the legal handgun, and while he unloaded the gun to secure it, he did so in an unsafe manner, near other people, police said.
Callahan was in a moving vehicle in Water Mill while trying to unload the gun and
secure it; the gun fired a bullet, which struck Callahan in the arm, traveled through the
hand, and was placed in the wallet located in the pocket of a passenger in the vehicle, police said.

According to police, the passenger suffered minor injuries.
Callahan was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor, police said. He was arrested Wednesday, processed and released for a later court date, police said.
