LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Islanders are bracing for some wet weather and gusty winds Tuesday night and Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.
Jim Connolly, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Upton office, said the rain is expected to start around 7 p.m. in Nassau County Tuesday night and a few hours later throughout Suffolk and the East End. about half an inch is expected Tuesday night, he said.
On Wednesday, there's a chance of rain again, with about half an inch in the forecast, Connolly said. Winds are expected to pick up Wednesday, especially in the afternoon, with gusts up to 50 mph continuing through the evening, Connolly said.
Although only some ponding is expected, the effects of the storm could be felt in the form of downed tree limbs and power lines from the wind, Connolly said.
The storm is expected because of a low pressure system tracking the Midwest and Great Lakes into Canada, he said.
Temperatures are expected to be mild Tuesday night in the mid to low 40s and remain in the 50s Wednesday. However, a cold front moving in on Wednesday night will see temperatures drop into the 20s before rising back into the 30s and 40s on Thursday and into the 50s this weekend.
PSEG Long Island offered advice to residents to deal with the strong winds.
