SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Hope was in the air recently as more than 500 gathered to fight depression and anxiety.
On Sunday, August 6, the Depression Research Foundation's 8th annual Race of Hope 5K brought together men, women and children in the village of Southampton in support of mental health awareness and research.
The event raised more than $275,000 for research into new and improved treatments for depression and anxiety. The award for largest team went to Josh Gruss and his team, Team Fleming, with 45 members, organizers said.
HDRF founder Audrey Gruss and board member Arthur Dunnam were grand judges for the event along with, for the first time, the two teenage grand marshals: Grier Henchy, the 17-year-old daughter of Brooke Shields. and Hayden Lucas, a high school senior and captain of the newly formed HDRF Teen Team. Earlier this year, Lucas partnered with HDRF to launch the Inaugural Teen Race of Hope in May in New York, organizers said.
Henchy was accompanied by her mother Brooke Shields, who was one of the first celebrities to speak out about depression, organizers said.
