A golf pro working at Poxabogue Golf Center in Sagaponack is one step closer to realizing his dream of playing on the PGA Tour.
Rob Corcoran shot a career-low 61 during the Metropolitan PGA Professional Championship at Rockland Country Club in Sparkill, New York on July 16.
The score set a new record at UpState Golf Course.
A two-day tournament, Corcoran finished in second place, having shot a 73 on the first day. With a two-day total of six under par, he qualified as part of the top 12 for next summer's PGA Professional National Championship in Mrytle Beach, SC. The top 20 finishers secure a spot in the 2014 PGA Championship.
He finished behind Rob Labritz, who held the previous course record of 62, and finished eight under par.
“Golf is just a roll,” Corcoran said between lessons at Poxabogue on Wednesday. “Sometimes your game is really open, like it was for me the other day, and sometimes it's not.”
This is Corcoran's third season as a teaching pro at Poxabogue. He spends the winters in Melbourne, Florida, working on his game.
Corcoran, a native of South Windsor, Conn., began playing golf at age 13. Professional about 13 years ago.
He usually shoots around 70. “I've had five or six 63s, and never a 62, and now this 61,” he said.
His students at Poxabogue, from the young tennis campers to the older adults, all wish him well. “It was great,” he said.
