PECONIC, NY — After watching, over and over again, as shelter dogs were released from their pens into the arms of their loving new families — finally, the “neglected” puppy who captured hearts had his turn.
Reed, a stray at the North Fork Animal Welfare League in Peconic, found his forever family after they saw a story about his condition in Patch. He went home on Monday.
“Reid went home today,” NFAWL staff wrote. “Happy life, Reid. We've enjoyed your company here at the shelter, but as always, a home is the best. Live your best life!”
Added Gabrielle Stroup, director of operations at the League in Peconic, “We are all thrilled that this sweet boy was finally adopted! Thank you Patch for making it happen!”
Stroup said after reading Reed's heartbreaking story in Patch, one family knew they had to bring Reed, a “gentle giant,” home.
The family had German Shepherds before he died, most recently around Thanksgiving, she said. “Their Shepherds were big like him. Reid will hardly ever be alone. They weren't looking for another dog yet. Then they saw Reid at Patch and said, 'That's our dog.' They left here and it was a match!” .said Stroop.
She added: “We're all very excited for him! It's time for his turn.”
Reid's story touched hearts. “It's a huge combination of Shep who loves everyone and everything – but he kept getting overlooked,” she said.
Reed, she said, was found a stray and taken to another shelter on Long Island.
“To get Reed seen by a new audience, we brought him to the NFAWL to help him find a home,” Stroup said.
Reid is estimated to be about four and a half years old. weighs 130 kg. “He's very playful, but he also enjoys a good cuddle session,” Stroup said.
“We use Reed when they visit schools or Boy Scouts because he's so good with the kids. He's great with other dogs and likes cats. He's really a gentle giant,” Stroup said. “He is one of the most perfect dogs.”
