Obituary:
On January 24, 2015, Sophia M. Isaacs “Jackie” left this earth at her home in Southampton, to be with the Lord. He was born on March 15, 1928 to Gertrude and Henry DeVigne in New York, New York. He grew up on 98th Street and Central Park West. He had fond childhood and young adult memories of playing and walking in Central Park. as well as good times spent with her close '98th St. Gang”—families that looked out for each other throughout the Great Depression. Her African-American and French ancestry took root in Alabama in the early 1800s.
Sophia was a graduate of Julia Richman High School in New York. She met her husband, Alban Isaacs, during a World War II victory celebration. They married three years later, on July 3, 1948. She was a volunteer typist for the teaching staff of the nuns at Our Lady of Loreto in Brooklyn, New York—the elementary school her three children attended. In the early 1960s he worked with James Farmer and the New York chapter of CORE – Congress of Racial Equality. In the late 1960s and early 1970s Sophia worked with Arthur Levitt, Comptroller of New York, as a stenographer/typist.
Throughout their courtship and marriage of 54 years, Sophia and Alban appreciated Southampton's natural beauty and visited regularly. In 1976 they made Southampton their home, whereupon Sophia began working with Albert Cavagnaro and later Michael D. O'Donohoe, Suffolk County Commissioners of Jurors.
During her working and retirement years in Southampton, Sophia was a loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her kind, gentle, light-hearted and generous spirit is forever etched in the hearts and minds of those whose lives she touched.
Her husband – Alban and her son – Antonis, predeceased her. Sophia M. Isaacs is survived by two great-grandchildren – Catherine and John Bailey; two grandchildren Nadjia and Alban Bailey; granddaughter-in-law Elizabeth Garduno Bailey; two daughters – Paula Isaacs Thompson and Nadine Isaacs Bailey; and, son-in-law John Bailey.
Shermona Thompson, her granddaughter and Sherman Thompson her son-in-law, preceded her in death.
A viewing will be held on Friday, January 30th at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton from 9am. to 10:30 a.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. at Our Lady of Poland RC Church in Southampton. Interment will follow at Sacred Hearts Cemetery.
