“I know my husband, Bill Von Essen, who died at the age of 82 on September 29, 2014, would like me to say that John was his best friend from the time they went to kindergarten through high school growing up together in Southampton and until the day that Bill died . Bill said John was his strength and a strong force in his life. Whether John was playing football, fighting on the battlefield in Korea, choosing the most wonderful wife Joyce, loving and living life to the fullest – Bill always said that John lived his life fearlessly. It's hard to believe he's gone, but maybe he wanted to be reunited with his old friend Bill. John will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”
