SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Friday's heavy rain and damaging winds once again caused flooding and coastal erosion throughout the city of Southampton.
According to Ryan Murphy, the city of Southampton's code compliance and emergency management manager, “Unfortunately we're seeing some very significant flooding again in a lot of the same places. We've closed a number of roads due to flooding.”
The Shinnecock Canal was overflowing Saturday morning. Flooding was also reported, along with road closures, on Dune Road, portions of Montauk Highway in Quiogue, Bridge Lane in Westhampton and South Country Road, Murphy said.
Once peak tides had passed at all South Shore locations, the hope was that the water would recede quickly, Murphy said.
“The morning tide should be the worst today, but it's possible we'll see at least some minor flooding again with the afternoon high tide in some of our more flood-prone areas,” Murphy said. “Thankfully the storm had very little impact on the electricity network in Southampton with around 60 customers out during peak hours. We will continue to monitor and assess conditions today and tomorrow.”
