SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Cyclists will soon have additional options in Southampton Village.
An initiative started by Southampton Village Mayor Jesse Warren in 2021 has led to the addition of bike lanes on several streets. The goal is to promote safe bike travel and give residents additional transportation options, Warren said.
During public workshops and listening sessions, residents expressed the need for improved bicycle connectivity throughout the village center.
The marking of the new bike lanes is set to begin next week, and markings have already begun, village officials said.
Areas planned for new cycleways include Hampton Road, Nugent Street, Windmill Lane, Coopers Farm Road and Vahradian Way. Additionally, new bike racks are planned for the West Main Street parking lot. The new cycleways also feature a new brick path linking Vahradian Way with Coopers Farm Road so that riders and pedestrians can easily and safely access the library.
“The new bike lanes give our residents more safe and fun transportation options,” Warren said. “By focusing on the village centre, we hope to connect the different areas of our town center and make Southampton even more accessible. Most importantly, these improvements will increase safety for cyclists as they travel along our roads in their own designated lanes.” “
Southampton Village Planning Commissioner Mike Lieberman added: “Bike lanes are an exciting update to the village centre. Micro-mobility trends and bike lanes are growing in popularity, so we're excited to be working with the mayor to make this happen. “
