BRIDGEHAMPTON, N.Y. — A man was arrested after he tried to steal $12,000 from a Bridgehampton grandmother in a phone scam, police said.
According to Southampton Police, the incident took place on Wednesday when a report came in of a phone scam in progress.
The woman reported a man on the phone pretended to be her grandson and demanded $12,000 in cash to bail out of jail, police said. She was able to confirm that her grandson was not in any trouble and contacted police, authorities said.
Detectives, assisted by the Community Response Unit, conducted an immediate investigation and were able to identify and arrest Odell K. Hall, 33, of Roosevelt, New York, police said.
Hall was arrested and charged with third-degree attempted grand larceny, a felony, and second-degree obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor, and was held for a morning hearing, police said.
