SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Local charities are the unsung heroes of our communities. For-profit and not-for-profit organizations strive to create lasting change and positively impact the lives of those around them.
Some people start organizations as a way to deal with grief, some see an issue they want to address, and some want to effect lasting change. Sometimes, all of these reasons apply.
Patch wants to highlight your local charity and connect it with community members who want to help and do good, so more people can benefit. Here is just one of the many charities doing amazing work in your community.

What is your mission?
Lucia's Angels is a foundation committed to helping women and families in Eastern Long Island with late-stage female cancers, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, and uterine cancer.
The foundation was created in memory of Lucia Terzi Bagan. Lucia was a very gifted person — not only of the material sense, but also of herself and her heart. No wonder she had so many friends and family around her in her final days. It was Lucia's wish that other women and their families would have the same kind of love and support during their most difficult times.
What does your charity do to further its mission? Please provide examples.
Lucia's Angels has provided assistance and funding for: gas gift cards, grocery gift cards, heating bills, dental work, house cleaning, rent, glasses, meal trains, babysitting, heating bills, health insurance, car repair, walking trips, massage therapy , transportation, hairdressing services and wigs. From special wishes like one more trip to the beach, to providing extra childcare, to holding a hand, Lucia's spirit and the Angels will be there.
What inspired you to start your charity?
My best friend, Lucia Terzi Bagan went through an aggressive form of breast cancer. My friends and I were with Lucia 24/7 and supported her and her family until she passed. It was her wish that other women and families would have the same kind of care.
