LONG ISLAND, NY — For those hoping to go out on New Year's Eve Tuesday night, don't forget to bring an umbrella.
New Year's Eve promises to bring soggy skies, according to James Tomasini, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Upton office.
Tuesday is expected to be dry in the morning and early afternoon, he said. “Then in the late afternoon, the chance of rain starts to increase.”
Rain likely overnight, heavy at times, with a chance of isolated thunderstorms, Tomasini said.
Period four “either side of midnight,” from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. is when the heaviest rain is expected, he added — just in time for the ball to drop in Times Square. A total of up to three-quarters of an inch of rain is expected on New Year's Eve and into the early hours of New Year's Day on Long Island, he said.
“Then as we go into Wednesday morning, we'll dry out, with the chance of rain dropping to 15 percent on Wednesday and a slight chance of showers on New Year's Day,” Tomasini said.
Above normal temperatures are expected, with highs in the 50s and lows in the mid-40s.
“The good thing is that we won't get too cold at night and we won't have to worry about cold temperatures. However, people should be careful when driving, especially during periods of heavy rain,” Tomasini said.
