LONG ISLAND, NY — Friday's burst of sunshine will be short-lived across Long Island, with showers and even a chance of light snow in the weekend forecast.
According to James Tomasini, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service Office in Upton, rain is expected to begin across Long Island Saturday afternoon and then increase Saturday afternoon and overnight before tapering off late Sunday. , when a lingering chance of rain remains.
“The heaviest volume and heaviest rain is expected Saturday night into Saturday night,” he said.
Across Long Island, about 1 inch to 1 1/4 inches of rain is expected across Long Island, he added.
A small chance, about 20 percent, exists for snow late Sunday night, with some possible flakes, Tomasini said. The biggest chance of snow is far north and west of New York City and in the lower Hudson Valley, he added.
“This is going to be primarily a Long Island rain event,” Tomasini said.
Weekend temperatures on Long Island are expected to range from the upper 40s Saturday afternoon to the low 40s Saturday night, with highs in the lower 50s Sunday afternoon, Tomasini said.
