LONG ISLAND, NY — Labor Day weekend could be off to a less than stellar start, according to the National Weather Service.
Dominic Ramuni, a meteorologist with the NWS's Upton office, said the first part of the holiday weekend “looks a little unsettled,” with showers and thunderstorms likely Saturday into Saturday night.
“People going outdoors should have an umbrella handy,” he said. “It won't be the best beach weather.”
With clouds and rain in the forecast, Saturday “will not be the best day overall,” Ramuni said.
Sunday could still bring the chance of some rain as a frontal system moves through the area, especially early in the day, he said. But by Sunday afternoon, conditions are expected to start drying out, Ramuni said. While a “shower of cheaters” cannot be ruled out, “Monday will be the best of the three days,” he added.
Temperatures throughout the weekend will reach the high 80s, typical for late August and early September — unlike last year, when Long Island saw temperatures in the 90s, Ramunni said. Lows are expected to fall into the mid-60s.
Despite the less-than-sunny forecast, Ramuni said: “This is definitely not a washout. It's not going to rain all the time. And, while there's a chance of rain from Saturday night into Sunday, the silver lining is that conditions are expected to improve by the holidays.”
