SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — As a powerful snowstorm hit the East End on Saturday, Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman declared a state of emergency that will last until Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
The “severe weather event of accumulating snow, accompanied by strong winds, is affecting the south shore of Long Island, including the city of Southampton,” Schneiderman said, adding that “public safety is at risk and there is an imminent danger.”
The state of emergency indicates that city officials, the highway inspector and police are authorized to take what is necessary to protect life and property and public infrastructure and to provide emergency assistance when necessary, Schneiderman said.
“It is imperative that roads are cleared for emergency vehicles in these extended cold and freezing conditions. Therefore, all private roads with snow accumulations greater than 6 inches are authorized to be cleared by the city's highway department,” said Schneiderman.
Also on Saturday, the city's transit stations are closed and residents are encouraged to use caution if attempting to visit other city outdoor facilities, as access may be reduced or restricted until the snow can be cleared.
