HAMPTON BAYS, NY — The competitive cheerleading team at Hampton Bays High School made history, the district said: For the first time since 2020, the team advanced to the postseason and qualified for the 2024 Suffolk County Championships on Feb. 17.
Hampton Bays is also the only team in the South Fork to represent competitive cheerleading at this level, the district said.
To earn the berth at the championships, the team finished the season with a school-record high average of 70.39 and placed fourth in nearly every event during the regular season, the district said.
Finishing ahead of Babylon, Hampton Bays will also compete against Southold, Shoreham-Wading River and Mount Sinai in counties.
The Hampton Bays cheer squad is led by senior captains Elise Flynn, Allie O'Brien and Maria Recarte and features two returning leaders from last year, Eden Spellman and Maddie Warn. Other high school students on the team include Diana Heming, Emily Lucero, Kiarra O'Hagan and Aoife Sheil. Daniela Gomez, Maya Grieco, Sophia Mazzaraco and Gwyn Reilly all pulled up to the varsity from the high school team to round out the 2023-2024 roster, the district said.
