According to the National Weather Service, a flash flood warning is in effect as a coastal low is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall Wednesday night into Thursday morning — with totals of 2 to 3 inches expected and higher totals possible.
Maximum rainfall of about 1 inch per hour is expected from 6 PM Wednesday through 3 AM Thursday.
Widespread minor urban flooding, poor drainage is possible Wednesday night into Thursday, the NWS said. Minor flooding is also possible along many small rivers, streams and creeks that react quickly. The threat of flash flooding is identified.
According to the NWS, soil moisture is running 60 to 80 percent above normal, with the majority of area rivers and streams running well above normal. “This will allow rainfall to more quickly convert to runoff and flooding. Each successive rainfall event will further increase soil moisture and stream flows, increasing the threat of urban and river flooding,” the NWS said.
The weekend could also bring more rain to Long Island, with an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain possible, the NWS said. Minor coastal flooding will be possible during high tide Thursday night through the weekend, the NWS said.
