Fire breaks out at Dune Road Home

WESTHAMPTON, N.Y. — A house fire broke out on Dune Road Friday, the Westhampton Beach Fire Department said.

The fire was reported in the 800 block of Dune Road at 8:46 a.m. The alarm was raised by a Westhampton Dunes police officer who spotted smoke coming from the bay home while on routine patrol, officials said.

The constable notified Westhampton Beach Fire Chief Darryl Schunk that there was a fire. the chief immediately activated the department's mutual aid planning, officials said.

Chief Schunk and Second Assistant Chief Jeff Wachenfeld were the first volunteers on the scene and reported heavy smoke coming from the ground floor and garage, officials said.

Firefighters were able to gain access to the unoccupied home through the garage door and firefighters soon found water on the fire, which was brought under control in about 15 minutes, police said.

Crews had to work for another hour looking for any possible fire extension and, at about 10:15 a.m., the scene was turned over to the Suffolk County Fire Marshal. The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.

No injuries were reported, officials said.

The Westhampton Beach Fire Department responded with two engines and a tower truck. Five other departments gave mutual aid: Eastport sent an engine, East Quogue a tower truck, and Quogue, an engine. East Moriches sent a rapid response team and the Flanders Fire Department sent a standby crew to Westhampton Beach Fire Department headquarters. Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance and East Moriches Ambulance were also on the scene, as were the Westhampton Dunes and Westhampton Beach Village police departments, officials said.
