SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — An elderly dog chasing geese was rescued from an inlet in Southampton Wednesday morning, police said.
According to Southampton police, at approximately 9:18 a.m., bay constables received a call from Sebonac Inlet about a 15-year-old Border collie that had swum more than 1,000 feet from shore chasing geese. Conditions were rainy and choppy, with low visibility, police said.
The dog was unable to make it back to shore, police said.

The dog was spotted by bay rangers swimming in circular patterns and showing signs of succumbing to exhaustion and hypothermia, police said.
After engaging in a short chase, officers assisted and guided the elderly dog to shore, where the pooch collapsed from exhaustion. The dog, which was transported by constables, has been reunited with its owner and is doing well, police said.
