Abby Russell, founder of 'The Sticks and Stones Comedy Club', at the SCC in Southampton has announced that some very exciting talent is taking to the stage there this month and beyond. Bringing something completely new to Sticks and Stones, singer songwriter Edie Carey will play an all-ages concert on Wednesday, October 18. This will be the first time at the club. Hearing Edie Carey sing for the first time can only equal hearing something instantly memorable and very special. Her voice reaches into one's soul and flickers a little pure light exactly where it is needed.
This performance will be a unique opportunity to witness the talent of Edie Carey up close and 'live' as this will be her first appearance in the Hamptons. Although she has played the Newport Folk Festival as well as huge festivals in places like Telluride, Colorado, she is excited about her show in Southampton. She lives with her family in Colorado Springs Colorado and is mom to Luca and Emmy.
In an interview, Edie Carey said that although she was a singer from an early age, she did not really start songwriting, playing guitar until she was a student at Barnard College in New York, where she majored in Italian. While studying Italian for a year in Bologna, Italy, Edie said that, “She learned about Italians and learned about acting. No one could really understand the words to my songs, so I felt confident. The Italians were shy, but generous.”
About who she is as an artist, Ms. Carey said, “I'm not a commercial artist at all. I was heavily influenced by Shawn Colvin even before I started playing guitar. I walked away from buying her record as a fifteen year old opening for her years later. That was one of the greatest moments of my career.”
Edie Carey has a discography that includes ten albums ranging from her first, The Falling Places, released in 1998 to her 2022 release The Veil. Her songwriting is superb. Some songs are so soft and delicate as if she were only singing to you at a campfire or in front of a fireplace during a snowstorm. Others evoke thoughts of love, faith, and concern for the struggles that true love besets us all with. When he hits some notes, he achieves a clarity of sweet wind sounds with early morning birds happily joining in.
She said she is really excited to be back in New York where she lived for ten years and played for Southampton and is seeing a lot of old friends. “So many of my friends that I lived with in Brooklyn and Manhattan now live in this area (the East End.) So it's going to be so fun to come back all these years later.” He obviously has a loyal following of people who know every note of every song. If you really listen to her songs, you can become one too.
Ms. Carey also said, “What's fun about performing live is that I get to tell some stories and weave the songs together. I try to make the show as engaging as possible… When people already know the songs, then I can tell a little story that can show a whole other side of the song.”
Her first guitar was an Alvarez that she bought at a small music store in her hometown of Dedham, Massachusetts. She recently gifted this guitar to her niece and nephew. On Wednesday, October 18, she'll take to the stage at Southampton Cultural Center with Martin's 1997 minute 00016 which creates “such a beautiful, rich dark sound coming out of it”.
