EAST END, NY — A devastated East End community is mourning the loss of a beloved sailor and fisherman, Capt. Mike Forman, who touched countless lives.
Foreman, 63, was tragically killed in a crash on the Sunrise Highway on Monday, January 8.
In the East End, many shared memories of a man who was known as a dedicated sailor and friend. “I think Mike was one of the sportiest anglers in the fleet,” Southampton Town Chairman Scott Horowitz said. “He was not only an absolute gentleman, he was a master of the craft. As president of the Shinnecock Marlin and Tuna Club, a position I personally held for over a decade, I could always count on Mike for involvement in any fishing activity that benefited the community”.
He added that he remembers presenting the Captain of the Year award to Chuck Foreman, Foreman's late father. “The two were a very respectable father and son team. They were fishing in the Atlantic coastal waters on the Sandra Jean,” he said. “Having lost my father when I was very young, I always appreciated seeing them out there together and I'm glad they enjoyed that special moment together. They were great role models for the fleet.”
Horowitz said he was proud to see Foreman working in the marine industry, “and he actually encouraged it. Anyone who got advice from Mike on boat handling, fishing, boat maintenance or anything related got information from someone who was a roller. (Spelling error intended).”
And, Horowitz said, “There will be a lifetime of stories to tell as a lifetime of memories made. Hopefully the tradition of fathers and sons deep sea fishing will continue. Rest in peace, Capt. Mike. You will be together me in the canyons”.
