SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Damage to Dune Road due to the effects of Hurricane Jose has led Southampton Town officials to declare a limited state of emergency, according to Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman.
There were several collapses of Dune Road early Tuesday, and the state of emergency is allowing the city to move sand to revitalize the dune, preventing further erosion and the possibility of a breach, Schneiderman said.
The Suffolk County Department of Public Works and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation have been notified, and the Southampton Highway Department is moving about 500 yards of sand from their stockpile in Westhampton, the supervisor said.
The affected area is between the Ponquogue Bridge and the Shinnecock Inlet.
The storm may also cause flooding problems along low-lying inland waterways, Schneiderman said.
