MATTITUCK, NY — Local business owners were urged Wednesday to be on the lookout for counterfeit $100 bills first found circulating at Mattituck High School.
The Mattituck Chamber of Commerce sent out a message Wednesday saying they received a call from Mattituck-Cutchogue Union Free School District Superintendent Shawn Petretti saying counterfeit $100 bills had been found at the high school.
“Please check any $100 bills that come into your business and notify the police immediately if you come across one. Authorities have already been notified by the school district,” the Chamber said.

Southold Township Police Chief Martin Flatley told Patch that the police department's school resources were working on the matter with Mattituk High School officials.
“We believe we have recovered all of the $100 bills that were in one student's possession,” he said. “We do not consider these to be counterfeit notes as they are clearly marked 'For Cinematic Purposes' and 'Copy' on both sides and were not presented as payment. I believe they were purchased online as a film prop.”

Flatley also said he did not believe the accounts had been used. “I believe they were all intercepted and taken from the student and I'm not sure the student had any intention of trying to pass them off as real currency,” he said.
