OLD SAYBROOK, CT —Cappella Cantorum presents its Spring Concert at the First Church of Christ in Saybrook, 366 Main St., Old Saybrook Sunday at 3 p.m., featuring Karl Jenkins' Peacemakers. The work is “dedicated to the memory of all those who lost their lives during armed conflicts, especially innocent civilians.”
The Masterworks Choir and Cappella Orchestra will be conducted by Simon Holt, and as a special feature, the choir will be joined by the Select Singers, a youth choir from Lyme-Old Lyme High School, under Choral Director Kristine Pekar.
Peacemakers features words of peace from iconic, world-changing figures such as Gandhi,
Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, along with other inspirational quotes from Mother
Teresa, Albert Schweitzer, Anne Frank and the Dalai Lama. Also featured are religious texts from the Bible, the Koran, St. Francis of Assisi, and Baha'u'llah, and the poetry of Shelley, Malory, Terry Waite, and Carol Barratt.
A line from the Persian mystic poet Rumi sums up the work's ethos: “All faiths, all sing one song: Peace be with you.”
Holt is the Music Director of Cappella Cantorum and the First Congregational Church of
Old Lyme, as well as the Founder and Artistic Director of Salt Marsh Opera.
Soprano Lisa Williamson will be the soloist of The Peacemakers.
