BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY — If you build it, they will come.
It's a veritable “Field of Dreams” in Bridgehampton, where the first varsity game in 43 years was played Monday.
According to the Bridgehampton School District, when fifth-grade teacher Lou Liberatore first came on board several years ago, he learned there hadn't been a baseball team since 1979.
For five years, he worked to bring a team back together, and on Monday, history was made: The dream came true as the Bridgehampton School community cheered and a ceremony marked the opening of the brand new baseball field.
The district hosted its first game against the Shelter Islanders. The event also included the unveiling of a marker to honor legendary Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski, a 1957 graduate of Bridgehampton High School.
Brand new team sees victory: The Bridgehampton Bees won the game against Shelter Island 6-0.
