About ARF's Operation Cat Program
Through a vast network of volunteers, Operation Cat (Op Cat) humanely reduces the growing number and unnecessary suffering of homeless, feral and stray cats using an effective trap/neuter/return (TNR) strategy. Volunteer caretakers provide food, water and shelter to more than 1,000 cat colonies, ranging in size from two to thirty cats. They trap the cats, bring them to the Adoption Center where they spay and vaccinate them and then release them back to their colony. One of the cat's ears is carved to identify it as a spoiled cat so it won't be accidentally trapped again. Since the program began in 1997, over 35,000 feral cats from Speonk to Montauk and most recently Brookhaven Township have been rehomed.
ARF's Op Cat Program offers free spay/neuter surgeries for trapped free-roaming cats in the cities of East Hampton, Southampton, Shelter Island and Brookhaven.
