HAMPTON BAY, N.Y. — New York Attorney General Letitia James' office has launched a special investigation into the death of an 86-year-old Hampton Bays woman who was struck and killed by an off-duty Village of Quogue police officer in his car in January. said the AG.
According to Southampton police at the time, the crash occurred at 10:52 a.m. Margaret Lucey was crossing westbound Ponquogue Avenue when a vehicle turning left from Good Ground Road onto Ponquogue Avenue struck her, police said.
The driver, Jon Stanton of Hampton Bays, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. No charges have been filed, police said. The AG, who did not identify Stanton, said he was an off-duty Quogue Village police officer.
Lucey was taken by Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.
Village of Quogue police did not immediately return a request for comment. Efforts to locate Stanton's attorney were not immediately successful.
Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI reviews any reported incident in which a police or peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person by act or omission, he said. the AG's office. According to the law, the officer can be on-duty or off-duty, and the deceased can be armed or unarmed. Also, the deceased may or may not be in custody or imprisoned, the AG said.
If OSI's assessment indicates that an officer may have caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident, the AG said.
