Long Island, NY — Six Long Island high school seniors are semifinalists for the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, the Department of Education announced recently.
Long Island students, among 650 nationwide, are:
– Ahmed Alaa-Eldin Hamdan, Bethpage-Plainedge High School
– Meghan F Kelly, East Quogue- Westhampton Beach High School
– Natasha Kulviwat, Jericho -Jericho Senior High School
– Brendan Shek, Jericho – Jericho Senior High School
– Elaine Wang, Garden City-Garden City Senior High School
– Ariana Amanda Watson, North Woodmere-Lawrence High School
The program, established in 1964, recognizes and honors some of the nation's most accomplished high school seniors.
The program was expanded in 1979 to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional ability in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, it was expanded again to honor students who demonstrate ability and achievement in the areas of career and technical education.
Each year, up to 161 students nationwide are selected to be US Presidential Scholars. The announcement will be made by the Ministry of Education in May.
