SOUTHAMPTON, New York — Modernize: 12 p.m.: There were 213 customers without power across the city of Southampton on Tuesday, officials said.
“A lot of it has to do with branches taking down wires because of the snow on the branches,” said Ryan Murphy, Southampton city code compliance and emergency management manager. “Thankfully, a lot of people seem to have heeded the warnings and the number of vehicles on the roads appears to be quite low.”
He added: “We continue to see some accidents here and there due to slippery conditions, however, and we urge people to avoid traveling if possible.”
The city's emergency operations center is open and city officials are continuing to monitor the situation, Murphy said.
Original story: With a winter storm warning in effect Tuesday and up to 6 inches of snow expected on Long Island, Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore has declared a state of emergency.
“The storm is expected to bring more than five inches of snow, which is also predicted to be accompanied by gusty winds,” said Ryan Murphy, the city of Southampton's code compliance and emergency management manager. “There is an expectation that this event will result in hazardous roadway conditions due to the potential for slippery surfaces and reduced visibility.”
He added: “Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads to allow our dedicated crews from the Highways Department, Parks Department and Municipal Works to efficiently carry out snow removal activities. will be closed on February 13. Please use caution during during the storm and stay safe.”
