HAMPTON BAYS, NY — Two gray seals will be released back into their natural habitat Wednesday in Hampton Bays.
According to the New York Marine Rescue Center, the release will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Tiana Beach.
The released pair includes Puffin, who was brought in on February 15″and was the first seal patient of the season. Puffin was reported 400 yards offshore on sand dunes near Montauk Highway with a full coat of lanugo,” NYMRC spokespeople he said. “Due to the proximity to the busy freeway, NYMRC staff decided to bring her in to better assess her health.”
Also released will be the Barracuda, which arrived on April 19 with a fishing jig built into both the front fin and mouth. “Fortunately, other than superficial injuries as a result of the hooks, the Barracuda had a clean bill of health and is now ready to be released,” NYMRC spokespeople said.
